Wilshire
Beauty is located in an exceptional example
of Art Deco Streamline Moderne architecture. Built
in 1935, on Los Angeles’ historic Miracle
Mile, the building features multiple deco elements
including geometric forms, recessed areas and
decorative banding. A series of flat curved planes
lead up to the commanding vertical tower, which
tops the structure. The building was originally
constructed to house the Sontag Drug Company,
one of the earliest self-service style drug stores
in Los Angeles. Sontag broke form with the traditional
drug store format of the time and enabled customers
to self-select non-prescription purchases instead
of having to request all goods over the counter.

Sontag Drug Company, offering customers a high level
